FAQ
Q. Does my whole family have to attend? A. Yes, it is best if the whole household, including kids can attend and participate. Every week, youth and adults learn similar communication skills to use at home together.
Q. Do we have to attend all 11 weeks? A. Yes! We understand that there will be times when a family member must miss but we ask that you commit to all 11 weeks. Families who attend at least 8 weeks will receive an attendance award and gift.
Q. How old do my kids needs to be? A. Each household must have at least one child 7 years or older. There will be classes for younger youth, teenagers, adults, combined family classes and free childcare for kids under 6 years old.
Q. Who will be teaching the classes? A. We have trained family coaches who will be teaching classes, many of whom are counselors or have implemented the program in their home.
Q. How much is this program? A. FREE! The entire program is free each and every week as well as FREE childcare and FREE dinner each week!
Q. What food will be served at dinner? A. We will have a family style meal each week. If you have any food restrictions, please let us know in your registration form.
Q. Where will the classes be held? A. Each week we will meet at Payette Academy (old Westside School). We will have dinner together in the cafeteria and then have breakout sessions separately. We will come back together for our family practice sessions before we close for the evening.
Q. I want to come but I don't want to talk to my kids about drugs and alcohol yet. Can we skip that week? A. We understand that we can have some tough topics on the agenda. It is important to learn how to communicate to our youth about the dangers they face. If they don't learn from a trusted source, they will find out another way whether we want them to or not.
Q. Who created this program? Is it religious? A. The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) was created in the 1980s by Dr. Karol L. Kumpfer, a researcher at the University of Utah. It was originally developed with funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to help reduce substance use and behavior problems in children of parents struggling with substance misuse. The program’s design focuses on improving parenting skills, family relationships, and communication — with separate and joint sessions for parents and youth. Since then, it’s been adapted for different ages, cultures, and settings, and is now used worldwide as an evidence-based family skills program.

About the Strengthening Families Program
The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) was developed in 1982 by Dr. Karol Kumpfer, Ph.D., and associates, with funding from the National Institute of Drug Abuse. It is an evidence-based parenting program designed to help parents and kids develop happier family relationships, improve mental health outcomes, and help decrease youth alcohol and drug use, violence, and delinquent behavior.
Insight Matters Inc., a non-profit in Payette County, has received a grant and donations to offer the SFP program for free in 2025.
